Recreation

The City offers a variety of programs, classes and special events for residents of all ages.

GRIP

Gang Resistance Is Paramount or GRIP is a successful, nationally recognized anti-gang program that steers children away from gang membership through classroom lessons, counseling and parental training. GRIP counselors present gang resistance lessons to elementary and ninth-grade students attending school in Paramount. Workshops and counseling sessions for parents and youngsters are also conducted throughout the community. More than 50,000 Paramount kids have gone through the program, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. For more information, contact the Community Services and Recreation Department, 15300 Downey Ave., (562) 220-2121.

STAR Program

Hundreds of Paramount students are taking part in the Success Through Academics and Recreation (STAR) after-school program. STAR is a collaboration between the City (which provides staff) and the Paramount Unified School District (which provides the space).

This stimulating program, which uses a proven curriculum based on lessons learned in other cities and school districts over the last decade, provides students in grades one through five with academic assistance and recreational activities. It operates every day of the week in each PUSD K-8 school, with a capacity for 85 students per campus. The program is funded with a $1.6 million state grant.

STAR is another example of the great relationship and sense of teamwork that exists between the City and the School District.
