Business License

What is needed to start a business? In order to start your business, you may need to obtain a resale number from the State Board of Equalization (800-400-7115), conduct a Fictitious Name Filing and obtain your federal and state employer ID numbers. These are very important steps required by law.

Who is required to get a business license? Anyone conducting any business in the City of Paramount, even if your place of business is not located in town, needs to get a business license. The following will provide you with the information you need to complete the application process.

How long does it take to get a business license? If you are located outside of the City of Paramount, your license will be mailed to you within one week. However, if your business is located here in the City, it could take up to six to eight weeks to get your license due to Fire Department, Health Department, Sheriff Department and Zoning Department investigations.

Do I set up these investigations? No, the Business Licensing Division will contact the various departments for you. If necessary, the investigating departments will contact you.

How much does it cost? The basic annual business license tax is currently $125.00 plus an additional fee based on the number of employees that you may have. Examples:

  • A basic business with one employee would be $125.00.
  • A basic business with five employees would be $154.04.
  • A basic business with ten employees would be $171.19.
  • License for construction businesses is $307 for contractors and $154 for subcontractors.

Note: The nature of your business determines whether it is categorized as a basic business. Business license taxes are indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and are increased July 1st of every year.

Where do I go to apply for a business license? You can go to City Hall at 16400 Colorado Ave., Paramount, CA 90723-5050, call (562) 220-2013 to have an application mailed to you, or download the application.

What other permits or licenses do I need before I can open? Besides complying with typical state and county rules and regulations, you may be required to obtain additional City of Paramount permits or licenses for specialized types of uses. For example, if you offer alcoholic beverages for sale, you'll need to get a Conditional Use Permit. If you'll be doing any interior space improvements, you'll probably need a building permit.
