Education and Experience: High school graduation or equivalent desirable. Experience in pipeline maintenance or closely related work required.
Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of: methods, tools and equipment used in water works maintenance, and safe work practices. Ability to: repeatedly perform heavy manual labor, including but not limited to lifting up to 80 pounds; working outdoors under adverse weather conditions; safely operating a variety of water maintenance tools and heavy equipment; performing work requiring physical strength and dexterity; detect the need for and complete basic repair work; prepare reports and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the public.
License/Certification Required: Valid Class C California Driver License and acceptable driving record.
Under supervision of the Water Operations Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work. Performs reading of residential and commercial water meters. Provides customer service through interactions with residents and customers. Performs water service repairs and maintenance work including installation and repair of mains, services, fire hydrants, meters, and any fixtures associated with water construction. Assists with emergency repairs of broken lines and services. Erects barricades around excavation; does semi-skilled concrete work. Operates valves and fire hydrants. Digs ditches and holes with power and manual equipment. Transports tools, division personnel and equipment to or from job sites. Performs duties involved in the hydrant and main line valve maintenance programs. Performs other duties as assigned.
