EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Requires Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field. Requires previous Public Works or Public Service experience including significant administrative and supervisory responsibilities.

Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, the Assistant Public Works Director will be responsible for the daily operation and supervision of the City's Public Works Department. Oversee and direct the daily operations of three Divisions: Water, Facility Maintenance and Landscape Maintenance. Develop, implement and coordinate divisional goals and objectives, policies and procedures; evaluate the operations and activities of the Department. Participate in the implementation and coordination of the public works maintenance management process. Participate in the preparation of the annual operating budget for the entire Public Works Department including individual Division budgets. Supervise and participate in a variety of personnel actions, including selections, promotions, performance evaluations, disciplinary measures, and dismissals. Respond to public inquiries and requests relative to maintenance services. Oversee the preparation of plans and specifications for improvements and modifications to water systems, streets, parks, public buildings, and other public works facilities. Prepare RFP's and RFQ's for professional and maintenance related services and monitor contract work. Prepare specifications for the purchase of new equipment. Prepare written reports regarding operations, personnel, budget and a variety of other subjects. Coordinate with other City management staff to meet the overall goals and objectives of the City. Develop/conduct training programs for staff. Perform the duties of the Director of Public Works in his/her absence. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Ability: Operational characteristics, services and activities of a public works program including engineering, traffic, waterworks, maintenance and source control functions. Principles and practices of program development and administration. Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications. Principles and practices of municipal budget preparation and administration. Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely; and make presentations before public groups. License Required: Valid Class C California Driver License and acceptable driving record.

General Duties: Under the direction of the Recreation Superintendent, will assist the GRIP Program with the presentation of gang resistance lessons to elementary and intermediate school age youth; will assist in the organizing and conducting of youth gang prevention meetings for parents and conducting other activities that will discourage youth from joining gangs; will also assist the Recreation Department with community recreation activities and special events; other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: Education and Experience: Completion of at least 45 semester units of course work in psychology, sociology, education, administration of justice, or a related field at an accredited college or university.
Knowledge and Ability: Knowledge of or familiarity with youth gang prevention programs desirable. Ability to conduct in-class gang resistance presentations for elementary and middle school youth. Ability to organize and conduct community meetings with area parents to discourage youth gang involvement. Ability to communicate effectively with area youth and their parents. Ability to work under the direction of Recreation Supervision staff in the development, coordination and implementation of community activities and special events. BILINGUAL CAPABILITY IN ENGLISH /SPANISH PREFERED.
License/Certification Required: Valid Class C California Driver License and acceptable driving record. Ability to obtain Class B California Driver License within six months of employment.
